Fate via ancient runes
Runes are the alphabet used by the ancient Germanic peoples, inscribed from the 2nd to 8th centuries across Northern and Western Europe — including Scandinavia, England, Germany, and Ireland — on memorial stones, weapons, jewelry, and magical artifacts.
Runic divination is a Northern European traditional practice that uses each letter of this alphabet as a symbol to gain insight into questions. Each rune letter carries a unique name and meaning, and by combining them, one reads the flow of destiny.
The oldest runic alphabet is the Elder Futhark, consisting of 24 letters. Its name derives from the first six letters of the alphabet (F, U, Th, A, R, K).
The 24 letters are divided into three aettir (singular: aett). The first aett (Freyr's aett): Fehu, Uruz, Thurisaz, Ansuz, Raidho, Kenaz, Gebo, Wunjo. The second aett (Heimdall's aett): Hagalaz, Nauthiz, Isa, Jera, Eihwaz, Perthro, Algiz, Sowilo. The third aett (Tiwaz's aett): Tiwaz, Berkano, Ehwaz, Mannaz, Laguz, Ingwaz, Dagaz, Othala.
Each letter carries a name, meaning, and mythological association. For example, Fehu (cattle, wealth) signifies material abundance, Uruz (aurochs, strength) signifies vitality and endurance, and Ansuz (god, message) signifies spiritual communication and wisdom.
According to academic research, the Elder Futhark was in use from the 2nd century, with the oldest confirmed runic inscriptions being the comb from Vimose, Denmark (c. 160 CE) and the iron knife from Thorsberg (c. 150 CE). Sandstone fragments excavated from the Svingerud mound in Hole, Norway between 2021 and 2023 have been radiocarbon dated to between 50 BCE and 275 CE, providing the oldest runestone context.
Multiple theories exist regarding the origin of runes. Some propose derivation from the Latin alphabet, others from Etruscan script, and still others argue for independent development, but no consensus has been reached. What is certain is that runes were already used in fully developed form in Northern Europe by the 2nd century.
The Elder Futhark was used until approximately 700 CE, after which it diverged into the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc (33 letters) and the Younger Futhark (16 letters). Representative academic sources include McKinnell, Simek, and Düwel's Runes, Magic and Religion: A Sourcebook (2004) and Looijenga's Texts and Contexts of the Oldest Runic Inscriptions.
Scholarly debate continues over whether runes were originally created for magical purposes or were a purely practical writing system. Skeptical scholars view runes as a purely practical writing system, while romantic scholars argue that runes inherently possessed magical character.
Of surviving runic inscriptions, only a fraction contain magical or divinatory content, with the vast majority being everyday inscriptions such as ownership marks, memorials, and gift labels. However, the existence of magical symbols and divination traditions in Germanic culture is confirmed by Roman records (Tacitus's Germania).
In the medieval period, records survive of runes being used as magical amulets and healing tools. For example, runic amulets at the Salerno hospital were inscribed for healing purposes, and cases of runes being carved on weapons and jewelry to invoke protection also exist. This demonstrates that runes existed at the boundary between writing and magic.
Traditional runic divination is performed using rune tiles or sticks. The 24 rune tiles are placed in a pouch, and the querent draws them randomly and arranges them.
Various layout methods exist, including single draws (single rune interpretation), three draws (past·present·future), five draws (runic cross spread), and seven draws (Thor's Hammer spread). Each rune can appear upright or reversed, with the direction altering its meaning.
For example, Fehu upright signifies material abundance and achievement, while reversed signifies loss and frustration. The combination and positions of drawn runes are synthesized to provide insight into the question posed.
Modern runic divination is used as an auxiliary tool for self-reflection and decision-making. Based on Norse mythology (the Eddas) and Germanic tradition, it is practiced as a symbolic system for reading one's inner state and external circumstances.
The academic value of runes lies in their role as primary sources revealing the writing system and worldview of ancient Germanic culture. Elder Futhark inscriptions are core materials for studying ancient Northern European language, culture, and religion, and their history and meaning have been systematically organized through academic research by scholars such as McKinnell, Simek, and Düwel.
LunaWitch's runic divination is based on the traditional meanings of the Elder Futhark's 24 letters and academic research, providing authentic interpretation of Northern European traditional divination. All results are for reference only, and we recommend using them as auxiliary tools for self-reflection and everyday wisdom.
